It can be done — but sometimes you have to pick and choose how and when. There may be a season of life when you simply can’t get away. But I highly recommend the adventure if it’s even for just a day.

One “vacation” I highly recommend is getting your family to a Joni and Friends Family Retreat. They are just plain awesome and you will come away refreshed and recharged.

I had no idea there were so many other sports opportunities for people with disabilities. My sons participate in the Special Olympics and it has been SO GOOD FOR THEM. Their confidence soars during the time they are working out and “in training” for the events. And they do very well!

This goes back to making sure we take care of ourselves. We must take care of ourselves and take time for ourselves and our mate. Marriages will crumble if we don’t. And there are definitely some seasons where there is a lot of difficulty, but if you can just hang on through them, and be there for one another, you will arrive at the other side with so much admiration and adoration for your partner. You will have been through a terrible storm together and nothing bonds you as much as that.

As they say, I think it will either make or break you. You have to decide which it will be.

Our two favorite “adaptive” activities are walking the dogs and swimming. The boys have just recently been playing a form of “football” with the neighbor boy who is many years younger than they are. But Isaac says he’s “helping him work out.” It’s adorable but good for them, too.

I am for any type of drug that helps our children with autism join the rest of the world in activity and interaction. I am extremely grateful for Risperidone and Tenex. I know it hasn’t worked for so many families but it has been a miracle drug for us. Were it not for those drugs, our boys would have to be institutionalized. But with these drugs we can interact with them and help them grow up and have productive lives.

Now if only they could approve this for the parents…(kidding! Well, sort of…)

When this dog gets to heaven, he has a big plush house waiting for him and all the dog biscuits he can eat. This is the dog that the twins adore more than any of the others. And this is the dog that gets hugged more than any other dog on earth has ever been hugged. It’s one thing to have one over-affectionate boy to be hugging on you and carting you everywhere, but it’s quite another to have two identical ones doing it. Every once in awhile I have to tell the boys to “step away from the dog and do not touch him for the rest of the day.” They love all the dogs, but this old fellow is their favorite.

The twins were especially tickled that they got the Captain’s Autograph. The tour sold books that told about the locks and that included pics of the ship. So, on the picture of the boat we were on, the Captain signed it to them personally. They are SO PROUD of that.
