Man Charged With Killing Autistic Boy, 3 - Houston... →
I can forgive just about everything.  But when it comes to harming defenseless children and animals, I have the most difficult time with mercy.  God forgive me, but I do.  I just can’t abide it.

I need this as much as my kids do!  But the price is really steep for me.  I wish they could make products like this at a price struggling families can afford more easily.  Why is it that the people who need these items the most are the ones who usually don’t get them?  I know we aren’t the only familiy with disabilities struggling to make ends meet.

Sensory Nanny - Home →
Another great resource for Sensory Integration!  It works, folks.  I have twins with autism who are living proof of it.  However, this site isn’t just about helping your child with autism.  It’s about helping the entire family.  I think you’ll like what you see here!

OT for Children with Autism – DVD Review - Autism... →
OT was a HUGE part of my son’s recovery.  We still utilize many sensory therapy techniques even if we don’t do “official therapy.”  If you aren’t doing any OT with your autie kids yet, I urge you to do so!

This site has a DVD series to teach social skills to children with autism.  They are designed to capatalize on visual peer modeling and music that helps kids with autism learn social skills.  Also included on the DVD and CD are teaching tools on how to use speech and music therapy techniques to help parents interact with their children.  I believe there is also Karaoke compatability.

I love sensory toys!  These toys made a huge difference for my boys when they were younger.  One of my fonder memories of a toy that wasn’t really meant to be a sensory toy was those shaking bobble guys that had four long legs and jumped up and down shaking.  When the boys were babies, their big brothers had them.  And about the only way the twins would stop screaming was when they would...

The Listening Program- Music-Based Auditory... →
I can believe this works really well.  Music has had a huge impact on my boys with autism.  They love their iPods and we have done our own “Listening Program.”  Not very scientific, of course, but I know that my boys respond to music and it also built up their intolerance for loud sounds.

UNC study: 'chilling' hardship rates among... →
I can certainly agree with this one.  There are so many expenses and so many hidden costs that other people never imagine.  Remember, in the past, these are the kids people put in hospitals and institutions and spent millions of dollars caring for.  Where did that money go now that the institutions are closed?  Why are families not getting the same kind of help?  It’s insane that these...

Keep your children from pushing your TV/computer...
insomniaccoder: This is one of those things that I figured out ages ago, but as far as I can tell I have never written about it. When you have a child that likes to climb a lot, it is only a matter of time before he decides to climb on top of your TV, and your TV may end up on the floor (I have seen it, the bang! is spectacular). The problem is that no matter how heavy those things are, they...

Phelps told by Teacher He Would Never Succeed →
Why a teacher would ever say this to a child, I don’t know.  Teachers need to learn — it’s not all about them.  If a child is misbehaving in class, the teacher needs to look at themselves and ask if they are using every means to reach the child.  If they are, then they need to realize that behavior is communicaiton.  Phelps was obviously communicating:  “My inner clock...

How Not to Have Church →
karlaakins: We have encountered this issue with our boys.  Then we came to Indiana and our church (my husband is pastor) has welcomed my boys with open arms.  In fact, the church has played a huge role in their “recovery.”  The boys who started as wee preschoolers are now 13 and are active participants in the services.  They are an inspiration.

A Church that Sounds Like My Church -- Welcoming... →
Our church is like this, too.  People with disabilities are a vibrant part of every area.  Mike, one of our best friends, is cognitively imparied and can’t talk, but he loves to take up the offering, get pastor a cup of coffee each Sunday, and pass out bulletins.  My twins, who also have cognitive issues and autism, help with the lights, the sound board, and cleaning the church.  There is no...

karlaakins: insomniaccoder: So basically, these people are protesting a movie that portraits actors as idiots? Can you imagine Adam Sandler trying to release his first few movies in this current political climate? They would probably crucify him for portraying himself as anything short of a MENSA chapter president. And then he would risk having MENSA staging protests against THAT. They...
